The International Standard
Book Number (ISBN) is a unique, scanable, book identifier. Not only
do book sellers rely on this number, but many print-on-demand printers
use the ISBN to identify each book and cover in its print inventory.

issued through Bowker. Bowker
offers many programs for self publishing and publishers, including
printing the actual bar code: Bowker

bar code into consideration when designing the book's cover, and
